Anzali Wetland Rehabilitation

The combination of land and sea ecosystems are led to appearing habitats called wetlands. According to Ramsar convention which its agreements were signed in 1971 by country's faithful to this agreement said that all participants are to promise in protecting and using wisely of wetlands through national measurements and international agreements in order to reach sustainable development.

Anzali wetland is one of the biggest wetlands in the state which is coastal wetland type and is connected to Caspian sea by a shipping connection in the range of two breakwaters.

The basin of the wetland has an area of 374 thousand hectare and in 1975 it has been recorded in the Ramsar International Convention.

In the last two decades human waste has leaded to the increase of floating solids in the water as well as increase of Phosphate and nitrate which has caused growth of hydrophytes and changes in the ecosystem of the wetland witch in some seasons like spring and summer a wide range of the wetland surface covers by a specific seaweed namedAzolla.

In recent years the overgrowth of these plants have caused problems like lack of sun shine and reduction of oxygen in the shallow parts of the wetlands and that is the main reason for changes in the ecosystem and reduction of aquatic creatures.

In 1993 Ramsar Convention decided to put Anzali wetland in the Montro list. this decision itself shows that Anzali wetland is in need of urgent rehabilitation therefore the World Bank paid a loan to Gilan water treatment company and financed the east Anzali project therefor Kayson & Sadrab Sanat Company were announced as partners and began construction works.
